There are so many factors that can contribute to dry skin! From weather conditions, hormonal imbalances, skin conditions and even medication! Sometimes it can be solves by changing a few things in your skin care routine. Other times, it may be a deeper underlying issue that will require medical attention.

First thigs first! If you have tried many things can you are still struggling with dry skin, its worth going to your doctor and getting it checked out to ensure there's no medical reason for what you are experiencing. Once you're in the clear you can look into other factors

Like I said in the beginning, there are many factors that contribute to dry skin. Let's take a deeper look into them.

Weather conditions

Many of us experience dry skin and lips in the winter, this is because there are lower humidity levels, colder conditions outside and dry indoor heat from things like radiators. That constant switch between the two can cause our skin not only to be a lot dryer than usual but also irritated, sensitive and even dehydrated. Similarly in hot weather conditions the sun can dry out our skin too compromising our skins protective barrier.

Hormonal Imbalances

When women are going through menopause or a menstrual cycle, we usually experience a drop in estrogen levels. This can sometimes leave your skin feeling more dry and even appear more wrinkled

Harsh Soaps

Similarly to shampoos, shower gels contain Sulphates. Sulphates are cleaning agents known as surfactants. They are great cleansers however can also be quite harsh on the skin, due to the fact that they strip our skin from its natural oils, leaving the skin drier.

Skin Conditions

Sometimes it may be a skin condition that we are not aware of. Conditions that cause dryness on the skin are: Eczema, psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis

So what are some things to try when experiencing dry skin ?

1. Look at the kinds of soaps you are using. Switch to sulphate free or more natural soaps that have more moisturising effects

2. Opt for fragrance free products. Fragrances have been known to be a common cause for things like contact dermatitis ( a type of eczema) or allergic reactions.

3. Apply a hydrating cream or butter to the skin straight after showering

4. Using a humidifier in your home during the winter months, Humidifiers are great as they help to reduce the air pulling hydration out of the skin, thus helping to reduce dry skin.

5. Drink enough water ! This is one many people don't thing about. Sometimes dry skin can be due to dehydration. If you are not consuming enough water you can sometimes experience dryness and rough patches. Get your intake up!
