OurStory

My name is Oumie, I am a Gambian UK based mother of 3, formulator and founder of Oumie Cosmetics. I make handmade holistic herbal products that help to revive dry hair, scalp and skin. I am passionate about helping black mothers and their children embrace who they are from the inside out.

My 4 year old daughter taught me so much about the true meaning of embracing who you are. She was diagnosed with non-verbal Autism at age 3. She struggles with being around a lot of people, noise, is very socially awkward, communicates by shouting and has some behaviours that others may find very questionable. Despite all of that, she fearlessly makes who she is known to everyone at all times with pride. She is part of what inspired me to come up with the Oumie Cosmetics slogan ''Embrace The Real You''.

Experiencing bullying and racism most of my childhood I knew all too well that feeling of unworthiness. I had a deep sense of self hatred by the age of 7 and that followed me into my adult life. After having my second daughter I struggled with postpartum depression and postpartum hair loss. Not only was I struggling to embrace who I was internally due to my past emotional wounds, but I now felt embarrassed and ashamed of my natural hair and had no idea how to take care of it in its new found state.

I later suffered a life-threatening miscarriage which lead me to developing other health issues and further hair damage. I finally decided to do a ''big chop'', cut all my hair off and start again. I dedicated my time to researching and studying to better understand the science behind afro hair, different herbal ingredients, oils and butter that are of benefit. From this point I spent the next 9-10 months formulating my first ever product "Ayurvedic Moisture Retention hair Butter". I began giving sample to friends and family and the results were exceptional! Not only was it helping with their hair issues but my product paired with me providing the necessary education was building their confidence and making them feel proud of their natural hair.

Once I became aware of that I knew what my purpose was. I knew I had to be the example for my daughters and the thousands of other people just like me. I have since created a community called ''The Embrace Tribe'' where I bring women together to help support them on their journey to embracing who they truly are. As well as giving more personal focused help with hair and skin issues. I have also moved on to formulating hair oils, body butters, lips balms and I'm currently studying to become a certified holistic herbal product maker.
